Recommended Age Related Macular Degeneration Vitamins

There are a number of Age Related Macular Degeneration vitamins (ARMD vitamins)  that are highly recommended to at least slow the disease down and maybe even prevent it altogether.  Many doctors are seeing the benefits of certain vitamins and other supplements that seem to be preventing and/or delaying ARMD.  Even if you are not suffering from any signs of the disease, an ounce of prevention goes a long way and may just help you as you get older and are more prone to the disease.

As people age, they often have fewer natural anti-oxidants that are necessary to fight disease.  That is why it is so important to supplement anti-oxidants for people who are over the age of 50.  Cell damage is prevented when the right amount of anti-oxidants are present in the body.  The eye contains many areas which host molecular oxygen and some scientists believe that this oxygen is blamed for the onset of ARMD.  These researchers theorize that using anti-oxidants such as vitamins A,C and E will slow down the disease’s progression by stopping excess oxygen from forming.

Another element that has possibilities for the treatment of ARMD is zinc.  Your eyes have very large amounts of zinc contained within them and most of it is concentrated in the macula and retina.  Zinc levels in the body start to decrease with age and that it why it is ultimately important to take zinc supplements to replace the zinc that is lost.

All of the studies being performed on the benefits of vitamin therapy for the prevention and treatment of ARMD are inconclusive at best.  Because it is so easy to overdose on high doses of certain vitamins, it is essential that a medical professional oversees the amount that you take.  Many doctors simply recommend taking an over-the-counter vitamin supplement in order to get the right dosage of vitamins needed to control ARMD.  But, as all doctors recommend, eating right at every meal will most likely supply all the nutrients and vitamins that you need.  Age Related Macular Degeneration vitamins can be found naturally in vegetables, fruits, grains and other food products.
